TRAVEL ADVISORY · PRE-FLIGHT

Five things to confirm before you head to the airport.

Quick, practical, US-traveler-oriented. None of this is legal advice — always confirm with the issuing authority.

TSA Real ID is in effect for domestic flights

Since May 2025, every adult passenger boarding a domestic US flight must present a Real ID-compliant driver's license or another TSA-accepted ID (US passport, passport card, Global Entry, US military ID, permanent resident card). A standard driver's license without the star is no longer accepted.

If you don't have a Real ID yet, bring your passport — it satisfies the requirement at every TSA checkpoint.

Passport 6-month validity rule

Most international destinations require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. This applies to virtually all of Europe's Schengen area, most of Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Notable exceptions: UK, Ireland, and Mexico generally require validity only through your stay.

Check at least 8–10 weeks before departure. Routine US passport renewal currently runs 6–8 weeks; expedited service is 2–3 weeks.

Online check-in cutoffs per carrier

Most US carriers open online check-in 24 hours before departure and close it 30–60 minutes before for domestic, 60 minutes for international. Typical ranges:

  • United / American / Delta: opens 24h, closes 45m (dom) / 60m (intl)
  • Southwest: opens 24h, closes 30m (dom)
  • JetBlue: opens 24h, closes 30m (dom) / 60m (intl)
  • Alaska: opens 24h, closes 40m
  • Spirit / Frontier: opens 24h, closes 60m
  • Lufthansa / BA / Air France: opens 23–30h, closes 45–60m
  • Emirates / Qatar: opens 24–48h, closes 90m
  • ANA / JAL / Singapore: opens 24h, closes 60m

Minimum connection times at top US hubs

If you booked a self-connecting itinerary (two separate tickets), build at least 3 hours between flights at a busy hub. For a single ticket, the carrier's minimum connection time (MCT) protects you, but it's often aggressive:

  • ATL: 45m dom / 70m intl
  • ORD: 50m dom / 90m intl
  • DFW: 35m dom / 70m intl
  • DEN: 40m dom / 75m intl
  • JFK: 75m dom / 90m intl (terminal change adds 30m)
  • LAX: 60m dom / 90m intl (T-B walk adds 20m)
  • SEA: 45m dom / 75m intl
  • MIA: 60m dom / 90m intl

Visa-free travel basics for US passport holders

The US passport allows visa-free entry to most of Europe (Schengen — up to 90 days within any 180-day period), the UK (up to 6 months), Japan (90 days), South Korea (90 days), most of Latin America (90–180 days varying), and many Caribbean destinations.

Two important changes to know: ETIAS (European Travel Information & Authorisation System) is launching as a pre-travel requirement for Schengen — confirm status before booking Europe. UK ETA is already required for short visits to the UK.
